 Composer Bio

With a sound reminiscent of Alan Menken and Alexadre Desplat brewed together and poured into a souvenir shot glass, 24 year old Brigid Smullen is a composer and songwriter based in both the Nashville TN, and Washington Dc areas. Originally from Fairfax, VA, Brigid is a graduate of Belmont University, where she successfully earned a BM in Classical Composition with a Voice Emphasis, as well as a Minor in German.

With a strongly programmatic style, Brigid is a true storyteller when it comes to the music that she creates. No matter the project, her music is written with the aim to make the audience truly feel something, and further the narrative being told. Defined by colorful textures, lyrical passages, and recognizable melodic structures, Brigid’s works are indicative of her compositional influences, and reflect her goal of one day writing for multimedia projects and companies.

Notable achievements include composing for the Belmont University CMPA Awards, working in collaboration with the Belmont University Department of Dance to compose for their annual Dance Composition Showcase (later performed in the new Fisher Center for the Performing Arts), and working as the composer/Music Director for the City of Fairfax Theatre Company’s, A Brief Shakespeare Festival in the summer of 2021, where she composed thematic scores for each of the Festival’s assorted scenes, as well as a mixed choral arrangement of a Shakespeare text written for and performed by the Festival’s cast.

“Each song she composed was unique and intricate, encapsulating the essence of each play, while still carrying a strong musical theme to tie the whole festival together” (Kira Kerr, CFTC Stage Manager)

In the fall of 2022, Brigid took part in the Belmont Honor's Composition Recital where she premiered a solo piano work. Additionally, that winter, she collaborated with the Belmont Motion Pictures Department to compose her first film score for a student short film, entitled, "The Third Division". In March of 2023, Brigid had her senior Composition Recital in Belmont's McAfee Concert Hall, which featured 25min of original works.

Brigid is currently spending her post-grad time in the Washington DC area, where she continues to compose, create, and expand her portfolio. Most notably, Brigid is currently composing her first full length stage musical, and working as a private voice instructor for NM Productions, Inc.
